Q.  What is web hosting?

A.  Shared web hosting is purchasing only a small portion of a internet server, rather then the whole server, it offers a cost effective solution to managing your website. With a shared hosting account you will receive space on a server, connection to the Internet, and software tools for you to build and maintain your web site. Use our Comparison Chart, to determine which hosting solution fits your needs. Web hosting varies by provider, you can choose from thousands of small one server web hosting companies with limited internet access connections or you can choose from professional datacenter provider's like WebCanDo.com, you can view our network overview here DataCenter

Q.  How soon will my account be set up and ready?

A.  Account orders are placed in a queue and are processed in the order in which they are received, usually within several hours. Your site can be uploaded to our servers immediately after receiving the welcome email, which will contain the login information for your account, plus the password for the username chosen during signup. In fact, we recommend that clients start uploading their site as soon as possible after setup is complete, so that once domain transfer is completed, the site will be available for use by your visitors.

Q.  How do I FTP into my account?

A.  To transfer files or browse through your directory using FTP, you need to connect with an FTP client to hostname ftp.yourdomain.com or ftp.webcando.com or ftp.webcando.net depending on servers (replace "yourdomain.com" with your Domain). Use port 21, and login with your account username and password.
Any files that you want viewable on the web should be uploaded to the /public_html directory. You might want to set this as the default directory in your ftp client.
TOP

Q.  What if I can't use FTP?

A.  We also offer a web based file manager that will allow you to upload the files to your account.

You can log into your control panel to update files. You can use the default access to your control panel below if your domain is pending transfer or recently registered.

Q.  How does an extra ftp account connect?

A.  They would use the same procedure as above, but they need to enter their username as user@yourdomain.com. For instance, if you create a user called bob, he would log in with the username bob@yourdomain.com. Please change yourdomain.com to your actual domain name.

Q.  Anonymous FTP?

A.  When anonymous ftp is turned on in your account, anonymous ftp users have access to your /public_ftp folder. To set things up for anonymous ftp access, log into your cpanel and click on "Setup anonymous FTP access". The first checkbox allows anonymous ftp users to download files from your /public_ftp folder. The second checkbox allows anonymous ftp users to upload to your /public_ftp/incoming folder. No anonymous ftp users can view or download the contents of the /public_ftp/incoming folder. To connect with an ftp program as an anonymous ftp user, you need to use ftp@yourdomain.com as the username. Leave the password field blank. The hostname is ftp.yourdomain.com . Use port 21.

Q.  What page is loaded when people go to my site?

A.  Unix and Linux servers are configured to read "index.html" or "index.htm" as the default page to load. It is STRONGLY recommended that you have an "index.html" page in EACH of your directories of your website. Directories without it allow browsing through all your files and exposing to public view files not intended for that purpose.

TOP

Q.  After uploading my files, links are broken, why?

A.  Unix is a case sensitive platform. If you specify for a file called "index.html", and the file is actually "Index.html", it will not work because the server will recognize that as two different files. This is one of the biggest problems for people transferring files from a Windows based computer to our Unix servers. If you encounter this problem, ensure that the hyperlinks on the pages correspond to the exact filenames on your website. If they do not match, you can either modify your hyperlinks and upload the pages again, or rename your files.

TOP

Q.  There are files in my folders can I delete them?

A.  If you log in to your site with plain FTP and find file there such as .htaccess, do NOT delete them. If you delete them, you could damage your Frontpage extensions.

TOP

Q.  I want start today, but my domain name isnt ready? What do I do?

A.  You can upload your page(s) immediately by pointing your FTP client to ftp.webcando.com , You will be prompted for the UserName and Password assigned to your account. After your domain is fully propagated through the system, you can upload to ftp.yourdomain.com.
TOP

Q.  How do I connect to my email account?

A.  There are a couple of methods for doing this. The easiest is to log into your control panel, click on "POP email accounts", and then click on the autoconfig link next to the account you want to set up in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express (assuming you use one of these email programs). This will automatically set up the email for Outlook or Outlook Express.

If this doesn't work, you will need to use the following settings.

POP3 server = mail.yourdomain.com SMTP server = mail.yourdomain.com
You will need to authenticate in order to send mail through our SMTP server. There is usually an option for this in the email client. You will then need to enter your username and password again.

The username has two possiblilities. If you are using the default account with the username that you signed up with, you can just enter your username. If you set up an extra email account, you will need to use user@yourdomain.com as the username. This prevents confusion if multiple people try using the same user name.

Q.  Connecting to email using Netscape mail ?

A.  There is an issue with Netscape regarding the use of the "@" symbol in the username. In order to log into your email account with a username with an embedded "@" using Netscape, you have to go into the user's profile directory for Netscape and edit the "prefs.js" file. Add the following line:

user_pref("mail.allow_at_sign_in_user_name",true);

That should fix the issue.

TOP

Q.  My POP accounts been deleted in cpanel?

A.   You have to be carefull changing your domain password for your account. When you change the domain password (the main password for your cpanel account), cpanel can delete any additional POP email accounts you may have created. You will be prompted to cancel all the accounts in the account. its best to check if your email accounts are there after every change you make to your domain password, just to be safe.
TOP

Q.  What is an email alias?

A.  An email alias simply forwards email messages to another email address. Your alias will not have its own storage space, username, or password like a real email address, and must be associated with another email address. Email aliases have the advantage of sending to more than one address. You can use an alias to distribute email messages to a group of people.
TOP

Q.  How many email POP accounts do I get?

A.  WebCanDo.com offers generous email plans:

You get 100 POP email accounts and unlimited alias, forwarders, and auto responders for the Standard Hosting Plan.
